Chapter Twenty-four

The following morning, the bustling Incident Room fell silent as Professor Mark Finch stepped up to address the task force. All eyes were on the criminal psychologist as he prepared to deliver his profile of the elusive killer haunting Leeds.

“Thank you all for welcoming me as a consultant on this crucial case,” Finch began, hands folded calmly behind his podium. “As you know, understanding the devious mind we are dealing with is key to stopping his deadly spree.”

He clicked a remote, the projection screen filling with gruesome crime scene photos. “Examining the ritualised aspects of the murders and the intimate knowledge of historic Ripper killings, I believe we are seeking an organised, highly intelligent offender.”

Finch’s piercing gaze swept the room. “Do not expect this man to make mistakes. He has planned every brutal staging meticulously to achieve maximum infamy and chaos.”

Changing slides, Finch continued. “Now, you may assume this imitation suggests a sexually motivated sadist, as was true of Sutcliffe himself. However, I believe this man harbours a different underlying drive—the desire for power through fear and legend.”

The screen was filled with images of the growing media hysteria around the case. “Our killer meticulously resurrects the Ripper’s infamous slayings to feed off the resulting public terror, like an emotional vampire. He craves infamy, not carnal release.”

George flinched at the word, ‘vampire.’

“Are you OK, George?”

“Carry on, Mark,” George said, not wanting to share with his mate the awful dream he’d had on Halloween.

Finch folded his arms grimly. “This is a cunning psychopath who views the original Ripper’s mythic status as a blueprint for his own eternal celebrity. Murder is simply the means to an end—the pathology of a malignant narcissist.”

“In English, please, Professor,” said DC Scott.

Finch locked eyes with Jay. “The killer wants to become famous himself.”

“Then why copy Sutcliffe?” asked Jay.

“I’ll get to that later, DC Scott, but for now, may I continue.”

Jay blushed as he nodded his head.

“Do not expect mercy or empathy from this subject. He will kill and maim without hesitation to further his delusional quest to become a living legend.”

Letting the profile sink in, Finch softened his tone. “I understand the immense pressure you all feel to stop this monster quickly. But hastiness leads to mistakes. Remain vigilant and organised—that is how we will outwit this ruthless adversary.”

He clicked the projector again, showing the growing memorial for the victims. “Finally, I ask you to remember it is not legends we seek justice for, but real human lives cut tragically short. This man may mythologise murder, but we must not lose sight of the tragic cost, or else his warped narrative prevails.”

Finch opened the floor to questions. The seasoned detective sergeant, Luke Mason, raised his hand. “You believe the killer has no personal motive beyond attention and power?”

Finch nodded. “So far, I see no evidence of an underlying emotional trigger like revenge. But we must let the evidence guide us. If such clues emerge, I will reassess accordingly.”

After fielding more queries, Finch concluded. “I hope this profile provides some clarity in the hunt ahead.
